What is the American dream?

Van Jones contends that the American dream is under threat due to an obsession with the federal budget deficit.  With the US federal budget approaching one quarter of gross domestic product, as compared to a historical average of just under one fifth and US federal debt exceeding 100% of GDP, A distinction shared by Greece, Ireland and Portugal all of whom required EU bailouts to avoid default, I submit that the greatest threat to the American dream is federal overreach and irresponsible spending on the part of both major parties.

The TEA parties are not the threat to the American dream that Van Jones supposes.  Rather, they are its last, best hope for a restoration of fiscal and regulatory sanity and an end to the era of big government Republicans.
