U.S. Senator Frank Lautenberg (D-NJ) says in reference to members of the Tea Parties that “they don’t deserve the freedoms in the Constitution, but we’ll give it to them anyway.”

Look past the vile arrogance of such a statement and see the real problem here: Sen. Lautenberg thinks rights happen because generous people graciously give us our rights.  That rights derive from government, from public servants such as himself.  Rights don’t derive from government; in truth, governments are the single most serious threat to individual rights.  Rights are something a person has simply by virtue of existing.  We don’t have to deserve them by having politically correct ideas.  We don’t have them by subscribing to politically correct philosophy.  We just have them.  I am not being magnanimous by recognizing that those who disagree with me possess the same rights that  I do as Sen. Lautenberg clearly believes of himself.  I am rather, being selfish.  For my rights are indistinguishable from the rights of any other individual.  To deprecate the rights of vile authoritarians such as Sen. Lautenberg is to deprecate my own rights.

Sen. Lautenberg lacks the authority to give anyone rights.  That authority is recognized in the United States declaration of independence.  Those are some big shoes Sen. Lautenberg presumes to fill.
